Library Book Borrowing for 2021-2022

Dear Parents/Guardians:

I am excited to once again be able to offer students the opportunity to borrow library books from our Learning Commons this year. Students in grade 1-4 will be able to access books during their library classes beginning this week. Kindergarten students will begin the week of November 15, 2021.

The following is some information regarding the borrowing procedures:

-Kindergarten/Grade 1 students will be able to check out 1 book each week.

-Grade 2-4 students will be able to check out 2 books each week.

*All books must be returned each week to be able to check out new books. If books are lost or damaged beyond repair a charge/fee will be assigned to the student so a replacement book can be purchased.

If a lost book is returned before the end of the year, a refund will be issued.

*Please see important information on the back of this sheet.

If you have any questions please feel free to contact me.

Book Care Policy

One of the concepts we emphasize in the Learning Commons is respect for property. You can encourage your child to take care of his or her books by:

-Keeping library books in a safe spot in your home - please help designate a spot

-Washing his or her hands before reading or handling books

-Keeping food and drink away from library books

       -Turn pages with care

       -Keep pets away from books

-Keep books away from younger brothers and sisters who might scribble in or tear books

-Provide a plastic bag to carry your library books in to keep them safe from spills and wet clothing in your backpack.

Lost or Damaged Book Policies

Students are responsible for the books they check out from Jennie Emery Elementary School Learning Commons. If a book is lost or damaged, the student/guardian will be responsible for paying the full replacement cost of the book. While we do not charge fines for late books, we do charge if a book is irreparably damaged or lost. This charge will be added to your School Cash Online account and must be paid before your child is allowed to check out books again.

Lost Books - If a “lost” book is found within the current school year (after the replacement cost has been paid), the student will be reimbursed the charge after the book  has been returned to the Learning Commons. The book must be in good condition and can be returned to circulation.

Damaged Books - A book is considered ‘damaged’ if it is returned to the Learning Commons  in a condition that requires extensive repair OR is unable to be repaired and cannot be returned to circulation. Examples of damaged books include but are not limited to water damage, mold, writing on the inside of the book, torn or missing pages and/or damage to the outside of the book. The librarian will determine if the book can be repaired or not. If not, or if the repair work is extensive, the full replacement cost of the book will be charged to the student.

Overdue Notices - Overdue notices and bills for lost books will be sent home periodically with your child. Please check backpacks and agendas for these notices.

If for any reason you do not wish your child/children to check out books from the Learning Commons, please contact their teacher or the librarian and let them know.
